Coto-Coil Company is still in business today. Origionally started by
Universal Winding Co. of Providence, RI, who made the machines that were used in the textile industry 2.

Universal Winding Company

Universal Winding Company Plant in Auburn, RI

Radio Retailing November 1927

Complete automatic coil winding machines. Left, machine for winding wire in layers, each as an angle to the axis of the coil, and to the preceding layer: makes a self-supporting coil requiring no binding nor flanges, narrow coils of large diameter are made on this machine. Right, machine for making Universal interweave or cross-wound coils, in which a cotton binding is interwoven with the parallel layers of wire. Both machines have automatic brakes for stopping machine in case of wire breaking, and counters to stop machine when required number of turns are completed. Made by Universal Winding Co., Providence. R. I. 1919 7

With $100,000 in capital stock Coto-Coil was founded in 1917 by Rob A Leeson 1, one of its principle leaders was Thomas P Giblin.

In 1921 John S Elliot is the manager at 87 Willard Street, the office and main factory and there is a branch office at 95 South Street in Boston. 9

In 1930 we find some ads and an article for Coils Inc. at 1183 Eddy St, Providence, RI. The article states that Coto-Coil equipment has been taken over by Coils Inc.. F C Hendrickson, formally associated with Coto-Coil for the last 9 years is General Manager of the new Coils Inc. company. In 1938 Hendrickson becomes the President of Coto-Coil 6 and in 1940 the receiver of the company 11

Other engineers 4 working for Coto-Coil were Granville P Lindley b1891 (Lead Engineer of the Byrd Expedition II) 3 and Lewis Bellem (1BES). Lindley and Bellam were also responsible for bringing Radio Equipment to Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific made famous by the landing place of the mutineers from the HMS Bounty. The island, cut off from the rest of the world since 1790, received a modern short-wave receiver and a 60-watt transmitter in 1938. The equipment was made possible by the generous donation of material and labor of many amateurs and manufacturers under the instigation of the Coto-Coil Company. The companies involved were Aerovox Corporation, American Lava Corp, Amperex Electronic, Bassett Research, Biley Electric Company, Cardwell Manufacturing Company, Coto-Coil Company, Kenyon Transformer Company, Ohmite Manufacutring Company, Par-Metal Products, Parris-Dunn Corporation, Pioneer Genemotor Corporation, RCA Radiotron, E M Sargent Company, Shure Brothers, Triplett, Willard Storage Battery Company.. 5

Coto Technology is still in business today. Their tag line now is "The World Leader in Small Signal Switching Solutions", and their products today include, Reed relays and Switches, Mosfet relays, and the world's smallest reed sensor. In the late teens and twenties they were the leader in Radio related coils. They also made at least one radio receiver as shown in the ad below.

Coto-Coil Vario-Coupler, 1920's

Giblin was visited in January, 1919 by Robert F. Gowen an engineer who worked for Lee DeForest. Ever since the cancelation of government contacts, Deforest became interested in the amateur market and he sent Gowen to meet with Giblin to work out the manufacutring of Honeycomb coils to be used in Gowens newly conceived "unit" sets with plug in coils.9
